After the Canadian Privacy Commission found that the app supplied by Tim Horton’s violates privacy laws by tracking customer location data, the company saw itself in hot water with a class action lawsuit.
Customers who used the app report receiving a disturbing settlement offer…that being a free coffee and kruller.
“As part of the proposed settlement agreement, eligible app users will receive a free hot beverage and a free baked good,” read the email sent to Tim Hortons app users on Friday.
Naturally, users of the app took to social media to immediately denounce the offer.
“Okay, so Tim Hortons spent more than a year silently and illegally tracking users through their mobile app and the proposed class action settlement is… a free coffee and a donut,” he said. “I swear to f**king god. This is real.” says lawyer James McLeod.
Tim Horton’s went on to explain that the retail price of a hot beverage was $6.19. Of course, no one believed that due to the fact that they were trying to tell that to customers that actually know the real price!
Many app users were left wondering what the chain’s lawyers were thinking.
This reminds me of a Seinfeld episode in which Kramer accepts lifetime free coffee as a legal settlement…only Tim Horton’s is offering it as a one time deal only!
