In 2020, Justin Trudeau and the Federal government announced funding of $173 000 000 to Quebec City based Covid Vaccine researcher and producer Medicago. The company’s focus on developing and marketing a plant based vaccine for Covid-19.
In February of 2022, Medicago’s new Covid vaccine, Covifenz was approved for use in Canada by Health Canada. This celebration would be short lived as in March of 2022, the WHO rejected the vaccine not because of safety concerns, but due to Medicago’s relationship with tobacco giant Philip Morris. Many point to this rejection as the death blow to not just the plant based vaccine, but to the research and production firm itself.
Medicago announced the cessation of operations in the following post to their website.
