2 Points of order today, and the first one is a doozy!
POO# 1 – Pierre Poilievre sought unanimous consent for a motion. Liberals yelled no before the motion was even read, which could have been devastating. Poilievre continued anyway, and we find out that his motion had something to do with the recent cuts at CBC. Liberals denied him even the opportunity to present the motion.
Discussion – Is it any wonder Poilievre plans to block anything the Liberals try to pass by beating bills down with amendments? The Deputy speaker did say that they have changed the way things are done and would not allow the opposition leader to continue. This is extremely problematic. Poilievre could have been trying to introduce a motion of recognition for Poly victims, which would have been devastating for Liberals to deny. I submit that motions for consent should be read in their entirety before hearing nays. One day, this tactic is going to backfire on someone. In this case, Liberals just shot down a motion condemning CBC for handing out bonuses to execs while laying people off. I expect we will hear more about this in the media in the near future.
POO# 2 – MP Lamoureux rose on a point regarding an earlier fiasco when a Conservative MP called Trudeau and his minions liars. Lamoureux claims more was said. Lamoureux wanted the Conservative member to not be recognized until he apologized. Deputy Speaker D’Entremont claimed he would review, but didn’t seem interested in further action.
Discussion – D’Entremont seems uninterested in following in Speaker Fergus’ footsteps on this issue. Smart move. In D’Entremont’s defense, Fergus refused to apply that same punishment on a Liberal member after having imposed it on a Conservative member just days earlier. Anything remotely related to that kind of ruling deserves a wide berth as Fergus is now facing demands to resign.
